At Sunstone, we’re a team dedicated to making a difference through data. We want to change the way businesses think about their data, and empower people to use their data with confidence.
Our name was inspired by the navigational sunstones of the early Vikings, evoking the seafaring tradition of being able to explore the open ocean as long as there was a sunstone to use as a guide.
How it all began
In a world of big data, Sunstone stands out by cutting through the noise. Founded by Roger Courtney in 2023, our mission is crystal clear: equip businesses with high-quality data solutions that are genuinely useful, not just sheer volume.
Back in 2022, Roger came to a realisation. Many companies were struggling to find value in massive amounts of generalised data. So Sunstone was founded on a new, different approach to data—one that prioritizes data quality, exploration, and relevance over quantity.
We help teams not only access first-rate data but also leverage it creatively and effectively. At Sunstone, it’s not about having more data; it’s about discovering the right kind of data.
Why the name Sunstone?
A Sunstone is a type of gemstone. In ancient times it was discovered that the sunstone had polarizing attributes. Given their unique polarisation capabilities, sunstones became widely used as navigational instruments by seafarers in the Viking Age. Regardless of weather conditions, sunstones could be used to determine precise location coordinates.
Our founder chose the name Sunstone to describe what he set out to build, a data company that brings multi-faceted guidance, exploration and innovation to you, your team, and your work.
Fun fact: our team members all have very shiny sunstones on their desks. We’re not sure if they influence our ability to navigate databases, but we like to think so.
